Hiking trails of Nerja
Nerja is a great place to go hiking or to take a gentle stroll through its streets. Its natural beauty makes it a nature lover’s paradise, as it is one of the few towns on the Costa del Sol that has escaped the rampant sprawl of hotels.
Ellinkauto: Cauce del Chillar, la Fuente de Esparto, Navachicha, Almendrón, la Cuesta del Cielo… all of these places where you can go hiking or walking in Nerja, Spain. These are areas that are prepared for this type of activity.
If you want to go to La Presa, you should travel the River Cauce del Rio Chillar, through its gulleys, streams, and forests, and definitely be prepared for this trip because sometimes on this route, it is necessary to tread through water. It’s not very deep though.
Another route you can go trekking on is La Fuente del Espanto. It is a 5 kilometer trail that isn’t too difficult. It goes through pine forests and peaceful areas, and also through one that was ravaged by fire.
A third recommended route in Nerja is that of Penon de los Castillejos. It runs through valleys, orchards, and gardens.
Lastly, there is the Ruta del Almendron, which has incredible views.
The Cuesta del Cielo
This route consists of two distinct sections. In the first, to Los Cortijos of Civila, the rise is comfortable and can be done by car but the difficulty becomes greater as we move forward. From the farms should be necessarily the recorrrido walk to the Cuesta del Cielo, a peak of 1,505 m of altitude striking its pyramidal shape. The climb is steep but the effort is rewarded with wonderful views.
We start walking on a lane in very bad condition which starts next to Camping de Nerja. The Source of Esparto
La Fuente del Esparto is a useful reference enclave to follow different routes. The distance from the main road is 6 Km.
Since the N-340 take the turning to the Cueva de Nerja. About 500 m at the entrance of the parking lot of the same continue along the path that starts on our left next to a pine forest.
The road ascends between scrubland and young pine reforestation by the right of the Barranco de la Coladilla Hunters, area to be recovering from recent fires.
A two kilometers and half Ilegamos to a fork where the road right up to the Cortijo de La Cuesta Civila by Romero, and the left one will lead us to the Fuente del Esparto. At our feet follow the Barranco de la Coladilla which runs encased in the bottom of the small valley populated Aleppo pines, boxwood, palmettos, rosemary and juniper. The opposite side is the Hill Mangüeno whose crest passes by a firewall.
Less than 2 Km after the bifurcation of the Civila and after passing through the old landfill, we reached a recreation area known as El Pinarillo, with drinking water and barbecues. Leaving this area to our left and continuing by rail arrived at the Fuente del Esparto. This owes its name to the abundance of this plant in the area that was collected for use in the local craft as raw material in the manufacture of ropes, baskets, sandals, etc.

A good alternative is to walk through the bottom of the Barranco de la Coladilla. It is accessed coming from the N-340 to the old factory of San Joaquin between the greenhouses and taking a path that goes behind it. Almendrón

The Penon de los Castillejos
This itinerary on its western slope of the valley fertile eastern part of our mountain, exploited since ancient times for traditional crops (vines, olive trees, almond trees) and more recently for subtropical crops.
Just started climbing the road with entrance from the N-340 passed its 298 kilometers, amazing greenery and freshness of this valley in contrast to other almijareños landscapes. If we are interested riparian vegetation, it is possible to continue on the road to Ilegar a roundabout and proceed along a lane that part of it and leads to the vicinity of the runway. We can trace only part of the river and to get to the very birth is quite complicated. There are areas where small waterfalls are formed and others where the river narrows more and more lush vegetation houses. It is the habitat of rare and terrapin.
We can choose to continue on foot for the rest of the route (9 Km), leaving the car at the roundabout and retreating to climb the lane indicated above, it is not in very good condition but also allows the passage of cars. We continue even leaving the lane right and left other qua lead to particular properties up to Los Cortijos Birth, called so because they were meeting to the place where the river is born.
After passing a small stream there are two ways to climb the Penon de los Castillejos: The first take a path that begins as a lane to our left, which will go up at the same crag in three quarters of an hour. The second alternative is to continue down the lane and at the rope of the mountain we turn to the left to access the base of the rock, this time on its eastern face. Navachica
This is one of the routes from the Fuente del Esparto. Formerly used to transport materials from the mines up the ravine Navachica The summit with its 1,832 m altitude is the roof of the Sierra Almijara meet.
The itinerary begins with the lane on the right a few meters before reaching the Fuente del Esparto. From here we climb a steep path to our right hand between oaks. We passed through some caves called Los Canos del Rey inside which remains standing water throughout most of the year. This is the Pinar de Lomas Llanas.
To reach the Navachica from here just follow uphill direction towards the summit. No distinction is virtually no path but the absence of scrubland found no difficulty reaching.
