Hiking trails of Nerja

Nerja is a great place to go hiking or to take a gentle stroll through its streets. Its natural beauty makes it a nature lover’s paradise, as it is one of the few towns on the Costa del Sol that has escaped the rampant sprawl of hotels.

Ellinkauto: Cauce del Chillar, la Fuente de Esparto, Navachicha, Almendrón, la Cuesta del Cielo… all of these places where you can go hiking or walking in Nerja, Spain. These are areas that are prepared for this type of activity.

If you want to go to La Presa, you should travel the River Cauce del Rio Chillar, through its gulleys, streams, and forests, and definitely be prepared for this trip because sometimes on this route, it is necessary to tread through water. It’s not very deep though.

Another route you can go trekking on is La Fuente del Espanto. It is a 5 kilometer trail that isn’t too difficult. It goes through pine forests and peaceful areas, and also through one that was ravaged by fire.

A third recommended route in Nerja is that of Penon de los Castillejos. It runs through valleys, orchards, and gardens.

Lastly, there is the Ruta del Almendron, which has incredible views.

The Cuesta del Cielo

This route consists of two distinct sections. In the first, to Los Cortijos of Civila, the rise is comfortable and can be done by car but the difficulty becomes greater as we move forward. From the farms should be necessarily the recorrrido walk to the Cuesta del Cielo, a peak of 1,505 m of altitude striking its pyramidal shape. The climb is steep but the effort is rewarded with wonderful views.

We start walking on a lane in very bad condition which starts next to Camping de Nerja. This path runs between a pine forest and abandon it when we see on our left a ruined house in the middle of a plain. then we climb among olive trees always leaving a stone wall to the right. This whole area is known as Viñas de Maro.

At the last olive tree, next to a large pine see the path to follow that skirts and crowns the hill in the distance divisándose John the Molinero Cortijo situated atop a hill through which we pass. The path continues first along the hillside and then rises gradually to the farmhouse where Nerja, Maro and Faro de Torrox can spot, we went through a pine forest and the path will lead us aa end of the lane, which from the Cueva de Nerja rises to the Civila.

The Civila is a group of houses at the foot of a hill surrounded by prickly pear and almond trees. From here the slope subtraction Sky go about two hours. We follow the path that climbs a hillside known as La Cuesta del Cielo. We descry to reach the hill at eastern slope with a magnificent view of the coast, distinguishing the Punta de la Mona and Cerro Gordo delimiting Beach La Herradura and the fertile Valle Rio de la Miel. Peak stands directly opposite the Horse’s Head.

A few meters up next to a dead tree, the path forks and continue on the left along the rope of the mountain. When the trail is lost, we will continue to field through orienting towards our goal mirrored cross that crowns the Cuesta del Cielo.

The Source of Esparto

La Fuente del Esparto is a useful reference enclave to follow different routes. The distance from the main road is 6 Km.

Since the N-340 take the turning to the Cueva de Nerja. About 500 m at the entrance of the parking lot of the same continue along the path that starts on our left next to a pine forest.

The road ascends between scrubland and young pine reforestation by the right of the Barranco de la Coladilla Hunters, area to be recovering from recent fires.

A two kilometers and half Ilegamos to a fork where the road right up to the Cortijo de La Cuesta Civila by Romero, and the left one will lead us to the Fuente del Esparto. At our feet follow the Barranco de la Coladilla which runs encased in the bottom of the small valley populated Aleppo pines, boxwood, palmettos, rosemary and juniper. The opposite side is the Hill Mangüeno whose crest passes by a firewall.

Less than 2 Km after the bifurcation of the Civila and after passing through the old landfill, we reached a recreation area known as El Pinarillo, with drinking water and barbecues. Leaving this area to our left and continuing by rail arrived at the Fuente del Esparto. This owes its name to the abundance of this plant in the area that was collected for use in the local craft as raw material in the manufacture of ropes, baskets, sandals, etc.

The water can be found there, drinking certainly did that during the era of mining the ore saw a laundry room is built.

The distance from the N-340 is 6 Km.

A good alternative is to walk through the bottom of the Barranco de la Coladilla. It is accessed coming from the N-340 to the old factory of San Joaquin between the greenhouses and taking a path that goes behind it. Nearby we can see the Aqueduct Eagle built to bring water to this old sugar factory. This lane runs with aa ravine and passes right next to an old quarry, subsequently used for skeet shooting. A little further down the ravine it and following him go enjoy cased by its banks.

Almendrón

We recommend this route for its spectacular scenery. About 1 Km from the mines of La Furia and one at the foot of a large pine tree, part of the path to our left perfectly visible. Zigzags along the crest of a hill and take us to a port on the north side of Almendrón.

From this all the Chillar River valley can be seen with the bottom magnet farmhouse, stunning panoramic views. We are at the right foot of Tajo del Almendrón to which we can ascend from here to then return by the same way.

If we left at dawn we’ll be back before evening.

The Penon de los Castillejos

This itinerary on its western slope of the valley fertile eastern part of our mountain, exploited since ancient times for traditional crops (vines, olive trees, almond trees) and more recently for subtropical crops.

Just started climbing the road with entrance from the N-340 passed its 298 kilometers, amazing greenery and freshness of this valley in contrast to other almijareños landscapes. Dozens of white farmhouses dot this valley reminding the traditional human presence that dates from Roman times and reaches renewed until today. The tops of the mountains maintain natural vegetation.

Continue along the road to take a path that goes to our left near where there is an indication indicating that the road we kept coming to an end.

If we are interested riparian vegetation, it is possible to continue on the road to Ilegar a roundabout and proceed along a lane that part of it and leads to the vicinity of the runway. We can trace only part of the river and to get to the very birth is quite complicated. There are areas where small waterfalls are formed and others where the river narrows more and more lush vegetation houses. It is the habitat of rare and terrapin.

We can choose to continue on foot for the rest of the route (9 Km), leaving the car at the roundabout and retreating to climb the lane indicated above, it is not in very good condition but also allows the passage of cars. We continue even leaving the lane right and left other qua lead to particular properties up to Los Cortijos Birth, called so because they were meeting to the place where the river is born.

After passing a small stream there are two ways to climb the Penon de los Castillejos: The first take a path that begins as a lane to our left, which will go up at the same crag in three quarters of an hour. Here we can see how the vegetation is recovering from a recent fire. The second alternative is to continue down the lane and at the rope of the mountain we turn to the left to access the base of the rock, this time on its eastern face. From here we climb guided by our intuition to the summit, from which we can contemptar wonderful views of the River Valley Honey and Granada and its coastline.

by peasants who inhabit these places it is counted. here it was found a bell regular size, it oxidized and deteriorated by time was changed trinkets from a vendor and which turned after being silver.

Turn the N-340 can be performed following the dirt track of 9 kilometers long that leads to the area of Cantarriján.

Peñón de los Castillejos

Navachica

This is one of the routes from the Fuente del Esparto. Formerly used to transport materials from the mines up the ravine Navachica The summit with its 1,832 m altitude is the roof of the Sierra Almijara meet.

The itinerary begins with the lane on the right a few meters before reaching the Fuente del Esparto. The lane leading to the heart of the ravine where we leave the car and continue on this between high walls. For its limestone nature there are numerous cracks and small caves. Some of them, those in the lower parts have been used to enclose goats as a shelter or housing.

Throat narrows and becomes a path that continues along a gravel pit popularly jabot), zigzagging and gain altitude. It evens out at about 1,000 m above sea level and reach llaneando again the channel where the ravine seems to end in a wall that plugs. To overcome this obstacle the road again gain altitude abruptly, sinuously climbing the side wall of the throat. After this and surrounding the projection which prevented us stay on the course, is reaching down to the entrance of the first mines of our tour are the Mina One and fury.

It will be necessary not leave the ways established as the ventilation shafts of the galerlas remain open and half-hidden by vegetation without any signals.

From the mines we continue along the ravine until we find a fork. At this point we must digress for the ravine on our left hand, thus abandoning the hunter (which continues to the right) and take us to the Loma de la Encina. Following this ravine about 300 m above, a new branch in which we now have to continue on the right appears.

Going up this ravine we find a series of steps two to three meters high and will not be very difficult to beat us. The slope increases progressively until reaching a point where the gorge is closed and can not continue for him.

From here we climb a steep path to our right hand between oaks. We passed through some caves called Los Canos del Rey inside which remains standing water throughout most of the year. When we crown this climb we find a hill called Ranchillo the wind which is worth rest and contemplate the scenery, because from here the panoramic view of the Barranco de Cazadores environment is extraordinary. In addition, we saw and Navachica summit, all Almendrón rope and to our right a vast forest of black pine mixed with oak adult appears to our eyes as a great oasis completely surrounded by rocky ridges. This is the Pinar de Lomas Llanas.

To reach the Navachica from here just follow uphill direction towards the summit. No distinction is virtually no path but the absence of scrubland found no difficulty reaching. In this way the slope is again smooth. Climb to the summit will be made us travel about 18 kilometers on foot and many others are we descend. This makes it necessary to leave very early in the morning and this route when the days are already long enough.
